Too Small To Be Agile
In this episode of the TPM podcast show Ron Gans, Software Technology Executive, explains how the phase a company is in largely determines the best methodology for managing software engineering. Strong processes like Agile will kill a small startup yet are critical to a larger company that needs to coordinate work across big teams and limit chaos. The criticality of the software to the customer business is also a factor in choosing the right engineering approach. Medical data is highly sensitive and needs to be accurate which requires extensive testing whereas bugs may not have the same degree of consequences for marketing software that might not need the same degree of quality assurance.
Going forward Ron sees the barriers to entry continuing to fall with software development as cloud solutions and higher-level languages make it easier (and less costly) for entrepreneurs to get started.
