The Long And Windy Road To Cloud Success
In this episode of the TPM podcast show Troy Davis, a Software Architect with CoupSmart explains how the initial fear of the cloud is finally evaporating but that developers are just beginning to grasp the issues involved in building apps that can truly scale. Troy has become an expert of using Amazon’s Web Services, relying on a variety of tools and services to monitor and manage his applications. He describes how the social media coupons his company uses require an extensive distributed computing resources to handle the massive rendering needs. Beanstalk has proven to be a powerful tool in scaling his apps to handle large loads, but it took a lot of education and thoughtful design to engineer his software to properly take advantage of it. It takes a completely different mindset to build apps that scale out, but the time required to learn how to do it will save a lot of heart-ache.
