Still Waiting For The Nirvana Of Cross-platform Mobile Apps
In this episode of the TPM podcast show James Wu, a Chief Solution Architect with Broadvision explains how difficult the learning curve is that companies is to write mobile apps. Not only are languages like Apple’s Objective C substantially different from what most coding professionals are used to but there are no really good cross-platform development options. According to James you pretty much have to write a native app for each mobile platform. HTML 5 may be sufficient for a few isolated scenarios but it lacks the richness of experience that most mobile device users expect. Worse still, testing for mobile apps requires the purchase of a large number of devices. You have to check your apps on many versions of the target mobile operating systems which requires multiple phones.
The opportunities from mobile apps are huge but the effort and expense required to do it right is not trivial.
